Artists displaying their work in
The Black Rock

Lar Cann

Lar was born in Plymouth and has studied at Plymouth College of Art, where he also received an NDD Painting Special. His work is held in collections in the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Saudi Arabia and Mallorca. For some years he has been pre-occupied with the granite quarries of Bodmin Moor as a stimulus for his work, using them as a point of departure to investigate the hidden geological structure revealed by the excavation process. He does not intend they are viewed as landscape in the conventional sense, but seeks to exploit qualities of texture and geometry as the building-blocks of the compositions.

Lloyd Peters

Cornish potter Lloyd Peters cites Hamada as an influence, and also more contemporary figures such as Yasuda and Malone. Simplicity is key. Softly thrown, his work is without unnecessary adornment, the form and glazes speaking for themselves. He embraces functionality, considering that something that functions well will, in the long run, be more rewarding than something purely decorative.

Working in high-fired stoneware, his glazes are developed and
refined over time, and make use of ashes and other locally sourced materials.

Tony Sutcliffe

In 2001 Tony relocated to Carbis Bay after 30 years visiting Cornwall. During this time his
development in painting had changed to the style you see today. His love for music, interest in
pre and post Roman Britain and now submerged in the beauty of Penwith, a remote enigmatic
pagan landscape with the relationship of land and sea, all has helped push the development of
his work. He finds the positive aspect of working in the non-figurative style gives him the
freedom to use all these influences, but do not strive for interpretation of his paintings, the
painting represents nothing but itself.

Judy Symons

Judy was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and moved to St Ives in 1973. Her work can be found in
the private collection of Slaughter & May, London, and in private collections in Singapore,
Australia, South Africa, USA, Italy and New Zealand. Judy likes to work from the figure in
charcoal, oil and watercolours. Her work also includes large watercolours of landscapes,
seascapes, portraiture, and animals, together with sculpture and pencil drawings.
